Elephant Etirement Park – Volunteer Elephant Training

The Elephant Retirement Park Phuket is a caring wildlife sanctuary for retired & rescued elephants that are free to roam, graze & swim in the natural surroundings.

The sole focus is to promote the well-being of the elephants. Strictly no abuse policy & absolutely no riding​.

We welcome you to come visit for a truly amazing time and experience the joy and excitement of walking, feeding, bathing & learning about the wonderful elephants!

Great project! You can really feel the love and care the ‘trainers’ and staff feel for the elephants. The program was really well coordinated. An awesome experience!

8:30am-12:00pm Follow the Half Day Elephant Care morning program
12:00-1:00pm Check in & relax
1:00-3:00pm Elephant behavior & wellbeing

  • Understanding the symptoms when elephants get sick & how to care for them
  • Learn about Thai herbs, ingredients & elephant medicine
  • Learn to make healthy food treats & special healing herbal balls
  • Enjoy feeding the Elephants their tasty treats
3:00-4:30pm Harvest & feeding time

  • Harvest grass, banana leaves & sugarcane for the elephants
  • Help plant Napier grass, banana and sugarcane crops around the park
  • Enjoy feeding the Elephants
4:30-6:00pm Free time & relax
6:00-7:30pm Special Thai DIY dinner time

  • Learn basic Thai cooking & some famous dishes
  • Learn to cook your own Thai dinner
  • Dinner time
7:30-8:30pm Elephant history & communication

  • Learn about the history & importance of elephants in Thai culture
  • Learn basic elephant commands
8:30-9:00pm Nighttime feeding & say goodnight to the elephants (optional)

7:30-8:10am Thai breakfast rice soup, toast with eggs, seasonal fruit plus tea/coffee
8:10am-12:00pm Mahout training

  • Gather food for the elephants – cutting banana trees & grass, preparing sticky rice balls and unloading the trucks with elephant food
  • Elephant jungle hiking
  • Clean & wash the elephants enclosure
  • Elephant feeding & communication
12:00-1:30pm Lunch & relax
1:30-2:30pm Feeding time

  • Prepare the elephants food
  • Making herbal balls + special treats
  • Enjoy feeding the Elephants
2:30-5:30pm Plantation harvest (offsite at nearby plantation)

  • Food harvest – cutting banana trees, Napier grass & sugarcane
  • Unloading the pickup trucks with elephant food
5:30-7:00pm Shower & free time
7:00-8:40pm Dinner with trainer & experienced Mahout

  • Learn about the life of a Mahout, their experience & training
  • Learn more elephant commands & communication
8:40-9:00pm Nighttime feeding & say goodnight to the elephants (optional)

7:30-8:10am Thai breakfast rice soup, toast with eggs, seasonal fruit plus tea/coffee
8:10am-12:00pm Mahout training continued

  • Harvest grass, banana leaves & sugarcane for the elephants
  • Prepare sticky rice & help unloading the pickup trucks
  • Elephant jungle hiking & continue learning about elephant behavior
  • Prepare elephant herbal spa treatment (for healing skin infections & keeping healthy skin)
  • Clean & wash the elephants enclosure
12:00-1:30pm Lunch & packing
1:30-3:00pm Elephant herbal spa treatment

  • Enjoy feeding the elephants
  • Put herbal spa treatment into containers
  • Apply elephant herbal spa treatment
3:00-4:00pm Mud spa, bathing, sand spa and say goodbye to the elephants
4:00-4:20pm Shower & get ready
4:30pm Transfer back to your hotel with the afternoon elephant care program

What To Bring

  1. Please bring 1-3 sets of ‘Elephant Adventure Clothes’ that will likely get wet and dirty (sandals or shoes / shorts / T-shirt / swimsuit / hat / sun cream / etc)
  2. Bring additional day bag with 1-3 sets of clean clothes for after relaxing at the end of the day
  3. Bring sports shoes / trainers with grip for the walking to other areas
  4. Towel
  5. Pajamas
  6. Any personal items – toothbrush, headlamp (good for evenings), camera, etc

Please Note:

  • Shower, shampoo, soap, bag for dirty clothing & bug spray all provided
  • The park huts are shared accommodation with bed + clean sheets. Toilet & shower is communal

Transport Details & Policy

Please kindly take careful note of the following to ensure a smooth trip:

  • Please be ready & waiting in your hotel lobby at the earliest pickup time shown (eg: 11:30am for 11:30am-12:00pm pick-up period). If you are not ready the van will leave without you. We also need to pick up other guests and delays at one pickup causes delays for everyone else. Thank you
  • If the instance that you do miss your pick up, you will need to make your own way to the park or your booking will be considered a no-show
  • If you miss your pick up and would like to reschedule your visit for another time, the reschedule cost is THB1,000 per person
  • If you require baby seats the rental cost is THB350 per seat and please kindly advise us in advance at the time of booking so we can prepare
  • If you have more than 1 piece of luggage or oversized luggage you will be charged an additional THB300 per luggage
  • Please kindly note pick-up times vary & are approximate as sometimes there are many hotels to cover in the different areas & traffic is unpredictable. If we are late we sincerely apologize in advance and thank you for your patience.
  • Extra travel zone costs are per booking based on the number of people in your group
